Richard Wilcox Somerset Cider now available
CiderPunk is pleased to announce that we have signed up Richard Wilcox to our band of producers, and you will shortly be able to order his ciders from the CiderPunk shop, to be delivered in our long-life bag-in-box system to your door.
Richard has truly refined the art of cider making. He particularly seems to love blending, and we were treated to an hour with him sampling all his special varieties that he makes mainly for his own enjoyment.
Two examples of these specials are his rum- and whisky-barrel fermented ciders. While he doesn't normally offer these for sale in volume, he has agreed that CiderPunk may offer a limited stock of these varieties for sale on our website, which is great news as they are fantastic and unique ciders - most producers ferment their cider in 8ft tall plastic "jam jars" as they are affectionately known, then transfer the cider to wooden barrels for sale.
Richard does it the other way round - he ferments the cider in the wooden barrels, then racks it off into plastic. "It stops fermenting when you takes it away from the mother", he explains, referring to the fermenting agent that forms in the apple juice when it reacts with the yeasts from the apple skins.
Richard's son, Darren, has also recently launched Wilcox Cider, which will mainly exist to sell Wilcox cider in bottles, so if that's more your thing, pop over there and take a look. But if it's the proper cloudy stuff you want, we can heartily recommend Richard's selection. In fact, in our humble opinion, Richard's standard medium cider gives award-winning Janet's Jungle Juice a run for it's money!
